It’s Friday night and you’re on a red-eye to the city of sin. Strapped to your chest is half a million dollars; in your overnight bag is another twenty-five thousand in blackjack chips; and your wallet holds ten fake IDs. As soon as you land in Las Vegas, you are positive you are being investigated and followed. To top it all off, the IRS is auditing you, someone has been going through your mail — and you have a multivariable calculus exam on Monday morning. Welcome to the world of an exclusive group of audacious MIT math geniuses who legally took the casinos for over three million dollars — while still finding time for college keg parties, football games, and final exams. In the midst of the go-go eighties and nineties, a group of overachieving, anarchistic MIT students joined a decades-old underground blackjack club dedicated to counting cards and beating the system at major casinos around the world. While their classmates were working long hours in labs and libraries, the blackjack team traveled weekly to Las Vegas and other glamorous gambling locales, with hundreds of thousands of dollars duct-taped to their bodies. Underwritten by shady investors they would never meet, these kids bet fifty thousand dollars a hand, enjoyed VIP suites and other upscale treats, and partied with showgirls and celebrities. Handpicked by an eccentric mastermind — a former MIT professor and an obsessive player who had developed a unique system of verbal cues, body signals, and role-playing — this one ring of card savants earned more than three million dollars from corporate Vegas, making them the object of the casinos’ wrath and eventually targets of revenge. Here is their inside story, revealing their secrets for the first time. Master storyteller Ben Mezrich takes you from the ivory towers of academia to the Technicolor world of Las Vegas, where anything can happen — and often does. Bringing Down the House launches you into the seedy underworld of corporate Ve

Born in Orlando, Florida in the mid 1960′s. I was raised in a small town that was sleepy to say the least, Apopka, Florida was as rural as the state of Florida could offer, as laid back as a town could be and as violent as any wayward city could suggest. That’s where I grew up. Apopka, Florida was not a place of great resources. I lived on the side of the tracks that left a whole lot to be desired. Outside of migrant work and flower nurseries, there was nothing big to employment Opportunities. My greatest childhood recollections of fun were, high school football games on Friday nights and family Excursions to Kelly Park (Rock Springs) Camping grounds to swim on weekends. I hated school but learned fast. And even though I rebelled a lot, I found that my mind was strong, my imagination was vivid and my views on life were huge. I wrote this book of poems because I knew that there was a voice, I possessed that needed to be heard. I’ve been through more downfalls and dealt with more drama than most peoples have ever had to face. Been to jail and to prison when I should have been on my way to college. Walked down dark roads and ran through fields all in a search for reason. I graduated in 1983 at 18years old. But my graduation Celebration was held in a Florida prison. The Department of Corrections has been blessed with my Downfalls. But now that I think about it, So also am I! I wrote this book out of strong feelings ,Deep studies, deeper convictions and beliefs that shaped who I am! The ramifications of my falling down and getting back up is what brought this extraordinary book to life. My faith in my creators’ voice and his divine grace and unending mercies have given me mypenmanship With a sound voice and strong mind. I Am Blessed! I chose this format to attempt to bless others now, with my gift of poetry and my insights on our planet earth as a struggling Black Man….The Author Billie Strong Jr.

Woody Hayes was one of the greatest football coaches in history—and one of the most fascinating. More than a brilliant coach, he was a complicated, contradictory man. The former history teacher ran his football empire as an absolute monarchy, but had a surprisingly altruistic side, hidden from the public, . and author John Lombardo uses his extensive sports-writing experience to craft an accurate portrait of one of the most complex and fascinating figures in football. First and foremost, Woody Hayes was a coach—and his achievements are stunning. While at Ohio State, he won five national titles, and thirteen Big Ten Conference championships, made eight Rose Bowl appearances, and earned two national Coach of the Year awards. Moreover, Hayes’s lifetime coaching record, 238–72–10, puts him in the first rank of college coaching immortals. No other coach won more games in a shorter period. Countless interviews of former players, assistant coaches, and friends shape the image of Hayes and his career, which spanned the mid-1940s to the late 1970s during a tremendous period of change in American society. A Fire to Win is an honest and revealing biography of Hayes, a man who ranks in the pantheon of football coaches. An easy-to-read, objective look at one of Ohio’s most powerful, complex, admired, feared, and contradictory figures. — The Columbus Dispatch A sympathetic yet evenhanded examination of a modern coaching giant. — Booklist Insightful and comprehensive biography. — The New York Sun Contradictions, of course, are what make Hayes fascinating. And Lombardo delves into those contradictions with a cell biologist’s eye for detailand a landscape painter’s eye for perspective. —Chicago Tribune

Excerpt: The Iron Bowl is a common name for the college football game between the University of Alabama Crimson Tide and the Auburn University Tigers. The series is considered one of the best and most hard-fought rivalries in all of sports. As the rivalry was mainly played in Birmingham, Alabama for many years, the name of the Iron Bowl comes from Birmingham’s historic role in the iron and steel industry, in which its only rival was Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Alabama leads the series with an overall record of 40331. The games are played at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa every even-numbered year, and at Jordan-Hare Stadium in Auburn every odd-numbered year. For much of the 20th century the game was played every year at Legion Field in Birmingham. Alabama has a 32-15 record in games played at Legion Field, while Auburn has a 7-3 record in games played at Jordan-Hare Stadium and a 4-1 record in games played at Bryant-Denny Stadium. In 2007, the game was pushed back to Thanksgiving weekend. Due to a television contract between the SEC and CBS Sports, the 2009 and 2010 Iron Bowls are both scheduled to be played on the Friday after Thanksgiving. The 2009 game was be the sixth Iron Bowl to be played on a Friday and the first in 21 years. Alabama and Auburn played their first football game in Lakeview Park in Birmingham, Alabama, on February 22, 1893. Auburn (then named the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama) won 3222, before an estimated crowd of 5,000. As if a signal of the future, disagreement between the schools began immediately as Alabama considered the game to be the final matchup of the 1892 season and Auburn recorded it as the first of 1893. Tensions further built when, after both 1906 and 1907 contests, Auburn head coach Mike Donahue … More:

Excerpt: The All American Football League is a proposed professional American football league. The league, which combines a professional pay structure with the requirement that all players be college graduates, had originally been scheduled to start in the spring of 2007, but later postponed its launch to the spring of 2008, only to cancel its 2008 season a month before kickoff and suspend its launch until the next year. Each year since, the league has made an annual announcement that the league’s launch would be postponed until the following year, but has taken no actual actions to rebuild the league. The most recent proclamation from the AAFL, February 2010, claims it will launch in spring 2011. The league has folded because of lack of money and support. The All American Football League, scheduled to begin play in 2010, is a professional American football league premised on the rule that all of its players had to have a four-year university degree, as employees of the AAFL rather than of the franchises, with the league to pay each player an average compensation of approximately $100,000 to year-round player employees and $50,000 to season-only players to attract the best non-NFL players. The AAFL’s inaugural draft took place on January 26, 2008, though it was effectively voided when the league canceled that season. For its proposed 2008 season, the AAFL established six franchises, all but one of which were located in the Southern United States (Team Michigan being the lone exception). One of the more unusual features of the league was that the teams had no nicknames, being referred to as “Team Florida”, “Team Texas”, etc. The teams, which had hired coaches, drafted players, and contracted with stadiums to host games for 2008 were: … More:

Strom is credited as the greatest referee in the history of the NBA and was known for his flamboyant style and ability to control the game. Over the course of his career, he officiated 2,400 professional basketball regular season games, 295 playoff games, seven All-Star games, and 29 NBA and ABA Finals. For his extensive contributions to the game, Strom was elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1995. Strom was born December 15, 1927 in Pottstown, Pennsylvania to Max and Bessie Strom. Earl’s father, Max, was a foreman at a bakery, and Earl grew up in the household as the youngest of seven children comprising five boys and two girls. As a child, he became interested in athletics and competing in sports, and this interest lasted throughout his childhood and into high school. At Pottstown High School, Strom played football, baseball, and basketball. After finishing high school in 1945, he joined the United States Coast Guard towards the end of World War II. Returning from service, Strom attended Pierce Junior College in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where he graduated in 1951. Any Given Day

Any Given Day

$10.77

The object of this book,”Any Given Day” is to take the gamble out of sports gambling. The statistical probability system explained in this book is an objective system for both professional football and basketball. There is no guess work as the system is based on simple math and statistics. The system was developed in the early 1950′s while working with my father who taught physics and calculus in college. Coming together, a mining and civil engineer and a teacher, coach and athletic director, the system has been refined and brought up to date for todays sports.February 6, 1005 which was Super Bowl XXXIX the exact score was predicted by the system, New England 24 and Philadelphia 21. Because of this, I was called gifted in Las Vegas. There are many games listed in the book that pick the exact score. How about week 10 played November 10, 2002 between Atlanta and Pittsburg. The system picked the game to be a tie. I called the game at 24 Atlanta and 24 Pittsburg. That became the final score after overtime. No game had ended in a tie for many years, and until this year, 2008, there had been no other. This book is much more than just the winning football and basketball system as it covers sports gaming rules, sports talk, the type of wagers, and which to use and which to stay away from using. This is a real love novel because with one $10.00 two team parlay bet you will almost double the price you paid for this book. The chapter, Beyond Stupidity, is enlightening as it gives the reader an inside look at the coaching world. A mistake by a coach can cause a loss, Where as, a mistake by a player may not. You will see why coaches are finally being paid more money than in the early years of pro sports.Money Management is a very important chaper for any phase of life. Remember “Pigs get fat, and hogs get slaughtered”. Self-discipline, self-control and mental strength is a large part of money management. Here is where we will talk about a

The term Arkansas Razorbacks properly applies to any of the sports teams (men or women) at the university. The Razorbacks take their name from the feral pig of the same name. The Arkansas Razorbacks are the only major sports team in the US with a porcine nickname. The University of Arkansas currently fields 19 total varsity teams (8 men’s and 11 women’s) in 13 sports. Built to replace the aging Cotton Bowl, it was the home field of the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys, and had a seating capacity of 65,675. The stadium opened on October 24, 1971. In 2009, it was replaced as home of the Cowboys by the $1.15 billion Cowboys Stadium, which completed construction and officially opened on May 27, 2009 in Arlington, Texas. The stadium was demolished by controlled implosion on April 11, 2010. Texas Stadium was to have originally been a stadium with a retractable roof, but the stadium could not support the weight of the entire roof. This resulted in most of the stands being enclosed but not the playing field itself. This unusual arrangement more commonly seen in European soccer stadiums prompted Cowboys linebacker D. D. Lewis to make his now-famous quip “Texas Stadium has a hole in its roof so God can watch His favorite team play”, often paraphrased as the “hole” in the stadium’s roof was there “so that God can watch His team.” The roof at Texas Stadium, whose worn paint had become unsightly in the early 2000s, was repainted in the summer of 2006 by the City of Irving, which owned the stadium. It was the first time the famed roof was repainted since Texas Stadium opened. The roof was structurally independent from the stadium it covered. The stadium hosted neutral-site college football games and was formerly the home field of the SMU Mustangs from 1979 to 1986. After the… More:

Born to Frank and Sandra Leach in Susanville, California, Mike Leach claims Cody, Wyoming, as his hometown. He graduated from Cody High School before studying at Brigham Young University, where he closely followed the exploits of the Brigham Young Cougars. The Cougars, guided by head coach LaVell Edwards and offensive coordinator Norm Chow, played a pass-oriented offense. Leach graduated in 1983 with a bachelor’s degree in American Studies. In 1986, Leach earned a Juris Doctor (J.D.) from Pepperdine University School of Law. Leach is also one of the most prominent graduates of the United States Sports Academy, from which he earned a Master’s of Sports Science/Coaching in 1988. Leach is married with four children. He was raised a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Leach is atypical among NCAA Division I head football coaches, as he did not play football at the college level. He was one of only five such coaches, with Paul Johnson at Georgia Tech, David Cutcliffe at Duke, George O’Leary at UCF and Bobby Hauck at UNLV. He now joins former KU coach Mark Mangino as unemployed coaches that did not play football at the college level. He graduated in 1915 with a Bachelor of Philosophy degree, followed by a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Cincinnati. While Knute Rockne and Gus Dorais are credited as the first team to develop and use the forward pass as a phenomenally successful strategic method to win football games during a 35-13 upset of a heavily favored Army team. The first forward pass was thrown by Roudebush a year earlier in 1912 to Dave Reese in a 3-3 tie against Wooster College and a 60-3 Denison victory over Otterbein College. George later stated that he used his experience of throwing stones and corncobs at hogs and chickens on his family farm to inspire his passing technique. Prior to 1912 a forward pass could only be thrown 5 yards behind the line of scrimmage and travel no more than 20 yards, as noted by football rules 6 and 12. Revised & Updated More than two decades after his death, Paul Bear Bryant’s imposing shadow still towers over the sport of college football. For twenty-five years at the University of Alabama, and thirteen years before that at Maryland, Kentucky, and Texas A&M, Bryant pushed his players to excel with a combination of charisma and fear, winning 323 games and six national championships. In this definitive portrait of a rough-hewn man with an extraordinary gift for leadership, Keith Dunnavant shows how Bryant survived headline-grabbing controversies and the vagaries of a changing social landscape to become college football’s greatest coach and the foremost Southern icon of his time. Coach is the epic story of a larger-than-life figure who overcame poverty and insecurity with intense desire and steely will, reflecting the transformational power of the American experience while emerging as a beacon of pride for Alabamians who felt defensive about their place in the world. Praise for Coach The definitive Bear Bryant biography…. The first serious attempt to portray Bryant as he really was…. —John Pruett, The Huntsville Times Bryant’s story says volumes about America and that story is very ably told by Dunnavant…. —Geoffrey Norman, American Way Magazine Balanced and intelligent. — Kirkus Reviews A masterful job. — The Christian Science Monitor Dunnavant skillfully raised my eyebrows…[in] a robust and revealing biography of college football’s greatest coach. —Paul Finebaum, Birmingham Post-Herald A thoroughly captivating read. —Larry Woody, The (Nashville) Tennessean Thanks toDunnavant, the Bear has a biography that does him justice. — The Sporting News

He was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2001. Levy’s family emigrated from Montreal, Quebec, Canada. His father, a decorated World War I veteran, ran a small business on the South Side of Chicago, Illinois, USA. He graduated from South Shore High School in Chicago, in 1943. Following graduation, he enlisted in the Army Air Forces and spent the remainder of World War II in the military; Levy was discharged from the army shortly afterwards. Though he was known to use historical examples to inspire his teams, Levy corrected those who used war and combat metaphors to describe football games by telling them that he actually fought in a war and that football and war were in no way comparable. Levy enrolled at Coe College in Iowa. There he earned varsity letters in football, track, and basketball. He obtained a degree in English literature, was granted membership in the Phi Beta Kappa Society, and was twice voted student council president. He was also a member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity. He was admitted to Harvard University for graduate studies in 1951, earning a masters degree in English history. Excerpt: Jim Simpson (born December 29, 1927) is a retired American sportscaster, known for his smooth delivery as a play-by-play man and his versatility in covering many different sports. In 1997, he won the Sports Lifetime Achievement Award, and in 2000 he was inducted into the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association Hall of Fame. A native of the Washington, D.C. area, Simpson broadcast Atlantic Coast Conference basketball games in the early 1960s and worked as a sports reporter at WRC-TV. Eventually he would broadcast many sports at NBC, including football, basketball, baseball, tennis, and golf. For much of the 1960s and 1970s he was generally considered the network’s number two play-by-play announcer, behind only Curt Gowdy. His work on American Football League and later American Football Conference games for NBC is perhaps what he is best remembered for. In 1979, the fledgling ESPN cable sports network brought Simpson on board to provide some needed credibility with sports fans. Simpson broadcast the first NCAA basketball game the network televised, with flamboyant Dick Vitale as the color man. Vitale credits Simpson with helping him develop as a sportscaster. Simpson also called USFL and College World Series games for ESPN. After his sportscasting days Simpson retired to St. Croix, Virgin Islands. Among other firsts he was the initial U.S. sportscaster to appear live via satellite from Asia, and he was involved in the first American sportscast using instant replay technology. In 2005, ESPN brought Simpson back from retirement to do play-by-play for a series of college basketball games in a “turn back the clock” format on the ESPN Classic network. … More: http://booksllc.net/?id=4109416

He plays for the Fremantle Football Club, wears guernsey number 29 and made his AFL debut in 2000. He is widely regarded as one of the premier centre half-forwards of the modern era, but has proven his versatility several stints in the midfield and back half. Pavlich was recruited by Fremantle (the Dockers), from Woodville-West Torrens (and Sacred Heart College) with the fourth selection in the 1999 AFL national draft. Pavlich had nominated for the 1998 draft, but was overlooked by several clubs. Most notably the Adelaide Crows instead drafted 17 year old Ken McGregor who went on to play 158 games between 1999 to 2008, and cross town rival Port Adelaide who instead chose 17 year old Adam Morgan who played only 3 games between 2002 to 2003 for Port. Since his first game for Fremantle, Pavlich has consistently shown all the attributes of a key forward: physical size (a height of 192 cm and a weight of 101 kg), strength, speed and agility. However, it was not until 2005 that he played primarily at centre half forward. Although still developing physically, Pavlich managed to stamp his authority on Fremantle initially in his debut season. Making his debut in round 5 2000 against Melbourne, Pavlich achieved the rare feat of kicking 2 goals with his first 2 kicks in the AFL. He went on to play 18 games for the season, earning himself a Rising star nomination while contributing consistently. The 2001 Season saw Pavlich spend more time in the Forward line. He managed to underline his potential with some eye catching performances including two 4-goal hauls against the Brisbane Lions which earned him 2 brownlow votes, the first of his c… More:
